Wrestling has been a lifelong ambition for Funk, (Who by the way, is of no relation to the legendary Funks.) His heroes included Hulk Hogan and Paul Orndorff (who actually later help train him.) Before wrestling his sports involvements included playing high school football and baseball until he was forced to quit to get a job. He also worked as a heavy machine operator.
He began training at the Power Plant in July 1998 and went on to wrestle in the WCW where he first teamed with Mike Sanders on the Saturday night show. After that he went on to have the idea for his current gimmick, Kwee Wee pitched to him by Vince Russo and Terry Taylor. They idea of the character originated as a take off on the Saturday Night Live character Mango.
